- Instagram, How do we feel we know a place never visited? Sara Cwynar’s (@cwynars) conceptual work explores the circulation of images in popular culture and the impact of photography on memory and knowledge. Here, several similar yet distinct found images of the Acropolis have been collected and rephotographed while held with her fingers. Even if we have never visited the site, we might feel like we know it through its widespread visual representation. In the title, an “encyclopedia” and “grid” highlight our drive to impose order while also suggesting the impossibility of knowing a place solely through representation. 📍See it in “Throughlines: Connections in the Collection” — Sara Cwynar (American, born 1985), “Encyclopedia Grid (Acropolis),” 2014. - Instagram, Walking into the weekend with “No Shoes.” 🌿 Beth Levine was one of only a handful of women shoe designers in the twentieth century. She saw potential, rather than limitation, in non-traditional shoemaking materials and forms. Levine used modern materials, such as acrylic, vinyl, and Astroturf, as well as everyday materials like paper, in her creative process. Her 1957 No Shoe design—a pair of high heeled soles with surgical adhesive pads made for her by Johnson & Johnson to adhere directly to the wearer’s feet—was ahead of its time. She revisited the idea in 1965 (shown here), making the heel lower and edging the sole with plastic leaves. 📍On view in “Future Now: Virtual Sneakers to Cutting-Edge Kicks” — Herbert Levine, No Shoes, 1965. - Instagram, Next week, Jeffrey Gibson’s (@jeffrune) “the space in which to place me” opens at the U.S. Pavilion at @LaBiennale di Venezia! This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Venice Biennale’s International Art Exhibition. On view April 20–November 24, "the space in which to place me" engages concepts that have shaped the artist’s practice over a twenty-year career. Bringing together sculpture, multimedia paintings, paintings on paper, and video, the exhibition explores the dimensions of collective and individual identity and the forces that shape its perception across time. The exhibition’s title is inspired by the poem “Ȟe Sápa” by Ogalala Lakota poet Layli Long Soldier (@layli.longsoldier). Long Soldier often uses concrete poetry and does so here, using language to frame a space and inviting the viewer to look at the space differently in an attempt to see the world differently.
