What Became of the Samurai in Modern Japan?

Sun, 12 Jan, 2014 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Ken Ruoff, Ph.D.
Professor of History and Director of the Center for Japanese Studies, Portland State University

A brief civil war in 1867–68 restored the emperor to power in a constitutional monarchy, and ended centuries of samurai rule in Japan. While the daimyo, or provincial warlords, were allowed to retain some personal land and wealth, the vast majority of the samurai class found themselves with no land, no income, and no official status. Professor Ruoff, author of award-winning books on the Japanese emperor in the 20th century, will turn his attention to the fate of the samurai in a century of upheaval as Japan modernized, became an imperial power, and emerged as a peaceful economic superpower in the postwar years.

Sponsored by the Asian Art Council of the Portland Art Museum.

Free for members and COllege Pass holders; $20 non-members, $17 students and seniors. Ticket includes admission into Samurai! Armor from the Ann and Gabriel Barbier-Mueller Collection and other special and general exhibitions. Space may be limited, so advance tickets are recommended and available online or on site.
