The Third String Quartet by Benjamin Britten
Performed by Arnica Quartet

Sat, 5 Apr, 2014 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

For a more contemporary interpretation of music composed in Venice, join us for Benjamin Britten’s Third String Quartet. Composed in 1975, the quartet was largely written at the famous Hotel Danieli, while Britten was on his last trip to his beloved city. The music begins with a constantly shifting motion that recalls the lapping of the water in the city’s iconic canals. The concluding movement is entitled La Serenissima and is in one of Britten’s favorite forms, the ancient musical form of the passacaglia. It refers even more explicitly to Venice with quotes from his final opera, Death in Venice, and strikes a melancholy farewell to the city that held great meaning to him his entire life.

Members free; non-members $20, seniors and students $17. Advance ticket purchase recommended.
