Crumpacker Family Library

The Anne and James F. Crumpacker Family Library is the region’s most comprehensive visual art resource open to students, researchers, docents, staff, and the public. The Library’s collection of more than 35,000 volumes originated in 1895 and includes current and historical periodicals, art archives, and resources specific to the Museum’s history. Located on the second floor of the Mark Building, the Library’s comfortable reading room and irreplaceable, non-circulating collection provide an urban retreat for anyone interested in art.

With particular focus on Northwest visual arts, resources include:

  • Portland Art Museum Archive
  • The Portland Center for the Visual Arts (PCVA) Archive
  • NW Artists Archive
  • Art Museum Collection Artists File
  • Contemporary Artists and Photographers Files
  • Art Subject Files
  • More than 300 videos and DVDs about art

Archived materials include:

  • More than a century of exhibition catalogues
  • The region’s first curatorial correspondence, including paperwork showing the genesis of the Museum Art School
  • Extensive exhibition reviews, period news articles, and ads, referencing the efforts of the Northwest and Portland art scene founders
  • The private papers of Museum founding patron Sally Lewis and Oregon landscape artists C.S. Price and Charles Heaney
  • Exhibition catalogues from Clement Greenberg’s personal collection, many with his handwritten notes
  • Ephemera and artist files containing rare reproductions of early work by now–renowned artists
