Thank you for your interest in volunteering with the Portland Art Museum. Unfortunately, there is currently a wait list for people to begin volunteering with us. Please click here to fill out an application to be placed on the waiting list. Your application will be held for three months during which time you will be contacted when an opportunity arises that meets your skills, schedule, and preference. Once contacted, the next step will be to undergo the Standard Orientation in which you will be taken on a tour of the various jobs that volunteers do, given a presentation on the policies of the Museum, and interviewed. The length of time between filling out the initial, online form and starting to volunteer will vary. Please feel free to direct any questions about volunteering to J Swofford, Volunteer Coordinator, at email@example.com or 503-276-4288.
The Portland Art Museum is looking for fun and engaging people-people to join our volunteer docent corps. This year’s docent class will focus on the creation of participatory experiences in the Museum’s galleries, with an emphasis on programs attractive to young adults and community groups. Training will include current docents and staff from across the Museum in an effort to explore the forms that engagement can take, as well as the Museum as a community public space and resource.
If you want an opportunity to be in on the ground floor of creating progressive and educational experiences for the public, we want you. The training will be experimental and collaborative in nature, and we are looking for candidates who are adventurous, flexible, and energetic, with a strong interest in building community. This wonderful opportunity will be limited to 10 people.
Details about scheduling/time commitment:
- The group will meet three times a month, from September through early June, and will roughly follow the school year, with recesses around the holidays and in the spring. After this training course, new docents will be ready to facilitate experiences in the Museum’s galleries!
- The training sessions will take place on Wednesday evenings from 5 to 7 p.m., and will include some work to be completed on your own time. There will be opportunities to learn and practice at other times of the week throughout the year.
For more information, or if you have questions, please contact Amy Gray, Community and Tour Program Manager.
Applications are due on Monday, July 14, 2014. Please email your completed application form and résumé to Sarah Lampen, Docent and Tour Programs Coordinator. We will interview applicants this summer.
Thank you very much for your interest in becoming part of the Portland Art Museum’s Docent Council. We hope to hear from you soon.
