SUMMARY:Born in Flames x Hi Books
DESCRIPTION:Born in Flames (1983) Directed by Lizzie Borden. 1hr 20min. Not Rated. \n\n\n\nJoin us for a weekend of early independent Lizzie Borden films presented with Hi Books. First up\, Born Into Flames—a postpunk feminist futurist provocation from the 1980s underground independent film scene.  \n\n\n\n“This unruly\, unclassifiable film—perhaps the sole entry in the hybrid genre of radical-lesbian-feminist sci-fi vérité — premiered two years into the Reagan regime\, but its fury proves as bracing today as it was back when this country began its inexorable shift to the right.” – The Village Voice \n\n\n\nGuest programming this weekend\, Hi Books is a tiny bookshop/artspace and occasional editorial/curatorial project with a focus on contemporary photography and independent publications in the fields of art\, fashion\, design\, youth culture\, rave culture\, counterculture\, and queer history. “We’re a proudly feminist\, artist-run\, owner-operated space\, dedicated to cultural diversity\, building community\, and providing opportunities for emerging artists\, photographers\, publishers\, and curators.” \n\n\n\nWe do not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, and films exhibited don’t necessarily reflect the views of PAM CUT or the Portland Art Museum. In addition to the synopses\, trailers\, and other links on our website\, further information about content and age-appropriateness for specific films can be found on sites like Common Sense Media\, IMDb\, and DoesTheDogDie.com.

SUMMARY:Romeo + Juliet
DESCRIPTION:Romeo + Juliet (1996) Directed by Baz Luhrmann. 2hrs. Rated PG-13. \n\n\n\nCatch Romeo + Juliet—the hyper-kinetic Shakespearean romantic tragedy updated for a new generation\, as part of ScreenPLAY!\, a new series that invites kids\, teens\, and families of all ages into PAM CUT @ The Whitsell.  \n\n\n\n“Romeo + Juliet is one of pure feeling\, a flame burning fast and clean. Movies are neither made nor received in a vacuum\, and they have a life beyond what we can initially imagine for them. That’s why so many of today’s grown-ups who saw Romeo + Juliet as kids will never forget it. And that is how a play lives forever\, reinvented again and again across the centuries\, even as its bones and its heart remain intact.” – Time Magazine  \n\n\n\nScreenPLAY! is PAM CUT @ The Whitsell’s kids\, teens\, and family monthly program – sharing cinematic art for all ages. \n\n\n\nWe do not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, and films exhibited don’t necessarily reflect the views of PAM CUT or the Portland Art Museum. SUMMARY:Jane B. by Agnès V. x Director Fits
DESCRIPTION:Jane B. by Agnès V. (1988) Directed by Agnès Varda. 1hr 37min. Not Rated. \n\n\n\nJane B. by Agnès V. is presented by Director Fits as part of a series on Fashion and Film. Two incredible artists converge in this film about aging\, art\, and achievement. Featuring actor\, muse\, and icon Jane Birkin in conversation with artist\, filmmaker\, and icon Agnès Varda — the film is a free-flowing portrait with incredible style.  \n\n\n\n“Made in the spirit of pure\, uninhibited play\, this free-flowing dual portrait unfolds as a shared reverie between two women as they collapse the boundaries between artist and subject.” – Criterion Collection  \n\n\n\nDirector Fits is a media platform focusing on the everyday sartorial decisions of filmmakers. We believe that directors are an often overlooked group of impeccably well-dressed artists making bold choices when it comes to clothing. We focus on their personal style\, the practical garments they wear while they work\, their buttoned-up red carpet looks\, and so much more. We dive deep into the thought process of a director’s view on clothing and how it affects them\, as well as their films. \n\n\n\nWe do not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, and films exhibited don’t necessarily reflect the views of PAM CUT or the Portland Art Museum. Registration requested. \n\n\n\nArts in Education Week\, September 13–19\, is a national celebration that lifts up the enduring power of an arts education. Arts education allows students to develop artistic disciplines\, learn about and understand multiple perspectives\, build connections with others\, and find their voice in the world. Engagement in the arts fosters durable skills such as creativity\, problem solving\, collaboration\, communication\, resiliency\, and critical thinking. These durable skills will be used by students throughout their lives.   \n\n\n\nThe arts are not extra; they are an essential part of a well-rounded education. Portland guarantees all 28\,000 public elementary students access to an arts education through the Arts Access Fund\, powered by the Arts Education Tax. The Arts Access Fund also provides grants for arts organizations that provide arts experiences for K-12 students and people in underserved communities. Last year\, local arts organizations recorded a combined 143\,525 arts experiences for K-12 students in Portland.    \n\n\n\nWe are proud to celebrate a 100+ year partnership with Portland Public Schools\, and each year the Portland Art Museum serves 30\,000 students through school tours and community access programs. Children 17 and under are always free.

SUMMARY:Star 80 x Director Fits
DESCRIPTION:Star 80 (1983) Directed by Bob Fosse. 1hr 43min. Rated R. \n\n\n\nStar 80 is presented by Director Fits as part of a series on Fashion and Film. A disturbing\, beautiful\, and haunting film about the rise-and-fall of Dorthy Stratten.  \n\n\n\n“Four stars! An important movie. Devastating\, violent\, hopeless\, and important\, because it holds a mirror up to a part of the world we live in\, and helps us see it more clearly.” – Roger Ebert \n\n\n\nDirector Fits is a media platform focusing on the everyday sartorial decisions of filmmakers. We believe that directors are an often overlooked group of impeccably well-dressed artists making bold choices when it comes to clothing. We focus on their personal style\, the practical garments they wear while they work\, their buttoned-up red carpet looks\, and so much more. We dive deep into the thought process of a director’s view on clothing and how it affects them as well as their films. \n\n\n\nWe do not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, and films exhibited don’t necessarily reflect the views of PAM CUT or the Portland Art Museum. In addition to the synopses\, trailers\, and other links on our website\, further information about content and age-appropriateness for specific films can be found on sites like Common Sense Media\, IMDb\, and DoesTheDogDie.com.

SUMMARY:Kika x Director Fits
DESCRIPTION:Kika (1993) Directed by Pedro Almodóvar. 1hr 54min. Not Rated. \n\n\n\nKika is presented by Director Fits as part of a series on Fashion and Film. Kika is a black comedy by Pedro Almodóvar that follows a young makeup artist sent to prepare a corpse when her attentions bring him back to life. Featuring a Jean Paul Gaultier wardrobe\, this stylish film helped cement the “Almodóvar look.” \n\n\n\n“Kika marked the first collaboration between the French designer and the Spanish filmmaker. Gaultier was responsible for the costumes of Abril’s character\, Andrea Caracortada\, who played a sadistic television presenter with a love for gore” – Director Fits  \n\n\n\nDirector Fits is a media platform focusing on the everyday sartorial decisions of filmmakers. SUMMARY:Siren: The Voices of Shelley Beattie w/ Irene Taylor Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Siren: The Voices of Shelley Beattie (2026).Directed by Irene Taylor. 1hr 43min.Courtesy of HBO Documentary Films \n\n\n\nThis film will be shown with open captions\, and the Q&A will have ASL interpretation.  \n\n\n\nJoin us for the Portland Premiere of Irene Taylor‘s latest film\, Siren: The Voices of Shelley Beattie. Following the screening\, Irene Taylor will join us for a moderated Q&A.  \n\n\n\nWhile searching the internet one day\, Hollywood veteran Marlee Matlin came upon the story of athlete Shelley Beattie – a fellow deaf woman whose life felt eerily like her own. Both women had experienced adventure and fame\, but also discrimination\, abuse\, and addiction while navigating a hearing world. SIREN: THE VOICES OF SHELLEY BEATTIE explores the parallels between the two legendary women in a haunting portrait of strength\, beauty\, and resiliency.  \n\n\n\nGuided by Academy Award® winner Matlin\, the film utilizes a wealth of archival footage\, home video\, intimate interviews\, and Beattie’s striking personal artwork to convey her vibrant personality and voice. Matlin sought out acclaimed documentary filmmaker Irene Taylor who has been exploring themes of hearing loss and family in many of her award-winning films for decades.  Together Taylor and Matlin decided to excavate Shelly’s extraordinary story. By bringing Beattie’s story to light\, Matlin and Taylor illuminate how the hearing world can be an isolating and cruel place for those who are deaf. Beattie found safety by protecting herself with a strong\, physical exterior\, then became a top international bodybuilder in the 1990s\, and starred as the character “Siren” on TV’s hugely popular “American Gladiators”. But beneath her tough armor was a troubled and sensitive spirit. The film traces Beattie’s early challenges with deafness in a family that struggled to understand her\, detailing her journey to breaking barriers in sports and media\, and highlighting her advocacy for mental health awareness all before her death at 40 years old. Matlin’s quest to learn about Beattie is an exploration into what it takes to overcome inner demons and personal struggles\, while turning deafness into a strength to transcend limitations and shatter boundaries.
