Artist Project: Critical Indigenous Photographic Exchange (CIPX)

Will Wilson brings his Critical Indigenous Photographic Exchange (CIPX) to Portland. Using a large-format camera and historic wet-plate collodion process, Wilson will invite a cross section of Museum visitors, indigenous artists, and youth to engage in the ritual interchange that is the photographic studio portrait. Collaborating with his sitters, Wilson indigenizes the photographic exchange, drawing attention to the relationship between the picture taker and the person posing. As a gesture of reciprocity, Wilson gifts the sitter the tintype produced with the understanding that he be granted a non-exclusive right to create and use a high-resolution scan of their image for his own artistic purposes.
Portraits are free and sign-ups will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Due to the wet-plate collodion process, three portraits per hour are available.
Accessibility
The Portland Art Museum is pleased to offer accommodations to ensure that our programs are accessible and inclusive. All spaces for this program are accessible by wheelchair. Assistive listening devices are also available for lectures. All restrooms have accessible stalls but no power doors. There are single-stall all-gender bathrooms available. Please ask staff for directions.
