Artist Talk: Avantika Bawa
Avantika Bawa is an artist, curator, and academic. Holding an MFA in Painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BFA from the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, India, her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and she has participated in the Skowhegan, MacDowell, Kochi Biennial Foundation and Djerassi residencies. Bawa’s curatorial work began with a hotel room show during the Art Chicago fair (1998) and has grown through her studio and gallery, aquaspace—a laboratory for new and multimedia art. In April 2004 she was part of a team that launched Drain: A Journal for Contemporary Art and Culture. She is Assistant Professor of Fine Arts at Washington State University Vancouver and currently serves on the board of the Oregon Arts Commission.
