Curator talk with Triple Candie (Shelly Bancroft and Peter Nesbett), 7 p.m.

Celebrate the opening of Being Present with the curators of Triple Candie. Shelly Bancroft and Peter Nesbett will join Sara Krajewski, the Eichholz Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, in conversation about their work as art historians who create exhibitions about art and artists, without art and artists. Triple Candie’s project Being Present examines the mythology of the Portland Center for Visual Arts, a groundbreaking artist-run gallery that brought ambitious contemporary art programming in Portland in the 1970s and 80s. Bancroft and Nesbett take a critical look at the liberal reputation of the organization and the city and situate PCVA’s activities and Portland’s civic initiatives within the layers of a contested social history. The unorthodox exhibition ponders what defines cultural progress and reflects on what art can, or should, do today.
