Richard Mosse’s exhibition The Enclave offers a complex and ambiguous representation of conflict and everyday life in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. This immersive video and photography installation invites conversations across disciplines about the relationships between art and journalism, between the history of colonialism and current African conflicts, between global capitalism and human rights. The Portland Art Museum will host a series of three seminars exploring these questions through works of art, literature, and the social sciences in dialogue with The Enclave.
The first seminar, on March 1, will discuss Joseph Conrad’s representation of brutality and suffering in colonial Congo in the 1899 novel Heart of Darkness. The second seminar, on March 8, will explore globalization and human rights in the contemporary DRC and other developing countries. The final seminar, on March 15, will approach The Enclave through recent and historic works of visual art, focusing on the photojournalistic, the psychedelic, and the sublime.
Participants are asked to spend time in The Enclave before the seminars begin, to read Conrad’s Heart of Darkness before the first seminar, and to complete other short readings (which will be provided) for the second and third seminars.
Seminars will be held on Sundays from noon to 2 p.m.

March 1: Joseph Conrad, Heart of Darkness
Led by Hana Layson, Ph.D. Hana has taught literature at Northwestern University and Portland State University. She is the School and Teacher Programs Specialist at the Portland Art Museum.
March 8: Globalization and Human Rights
Led by Christopher Carey, Ph.D, J.D. Chris is an Associate Professor of Community Health at Portland State University whose research focuses on human trafficking.
March 15: Photojournalistic, Psychedelic, and Sublime
Led by Sarah Wolf Newlands, MFA. Sarah is an artist, museum educator, and Assistant Professor in University Studies at Portland State University.
