El Greco’s Holy Family with Mary Magdalen: A Masterwork in Context

Dawson Carr, Ph.D.
The Janet & Richard Geary Curator of European Art
This talk will examine Holy Family with Mary Magdalen, the painting featured in the fifth installment of the Museum’s
MASTERWORKS | Portland series. One of El Greco’s greatest devotional images, this tender,
visionary treatment of the Holy Family will be considered in the context of his remarkable, multi-
cultural evolution as a painter, and as a reflection of the emotive spirituality of Spain’s Golden Age.

Tickets available online.
