Global Street Dance Masquerade #GSDMQ8 and We.Construct.Marvels.Between.Monuments. invite you to an interactive presentation about the performance work of Rashad Pridgen and The Black Lives Masquerade project.
The program will include a community movement exercise, a screening of the short film The Black Lives Masquerade, and a post-screening conversation between Rashad Pridgen and Libby Werbel, Artistic Director of We.Construct.Marvels.Between.Monuments.
The Black Lives Masquerade short film (16 min.)is a cinematic dance video documenting The Black Lives Masquerade, a live street dance, performance ceremony presented in east Oakland California. The cinematic offering captures the presence of black men holding space publicly and creativity for the arrival of The Black Lives Masquerade suit. This visceral dance video reflects on utilizing African Diasporic tradition for communal healing to elevate black lives lost from police brutality, gun violence and racial injustice. About the Global Street Dance Masquerade Project:
Global Street Dance Masquerade Project is a multidisciplinary street dance ceremony, site specific performance, creative direct action and community engagement project that culminates with the creation of full body Afrofuturist masquerade suits.
About We.Construct.Marvels…:
We.Construct.Marvels.Between.Monuments. is an exhibition series at the Portland Art Museum encouraging audiences to think critically about how museums have traditionally granted access to art and knowledge. Each exhibit acts as a platform for artists to ask questions about institutional representation, alternative exhibition models, and what it takes to see themselves and their concerns reflected regularly in their city’s art museum.
Accessibility
The Portland Art Museum is pleased to offer accommodations to ensure that our programs are accessible and inclusive. All spaces for this program are accessible by wheelchair. Assistive listening devices are also available for lectures. All restrooms have accessible stalls but no power doors. There are single-stall all-gender bathrooms available.
