Midday Art Break: Classically Modern – The Portraiture of Věra Prášilova Scott
1219 Southwest Park Avenue
Portland, OR 97205
USA
Take a break from your workday on the second Wednesday of the month and join a curator, museum educator, artist, or local scholar for a 45-minute talk in the galleries.
In the years following World War I, European photographers rapidly shed the nostalgic, softly focused trappings of Pictorialism for crisp imagery and a modern sensibility reflecting the industrial energy of the era. Bohemia-born artist Věra Prášilova Scott (1899-1996), who immigrated to the United States in 1924, gracefully fused these competing aesthetics in her photographic portraits produced in New York City, Portland, and Houston, Texas. Classically Modern, an installation of more than seventy photographs, reveals her skill in creating portraits of striking beauty that subtly combine elements of European modernism, American fashion photography, and the alluring intimacy of fine studio portraiture. Join Julia Dolan, Ph.D., The Minor White Curator of Photography, and Nadja Lilly, the artist’s daughter, for this exhibition walk-through.
All talks begin at 12:30 p.m. Space is limited.
