The Portland Art Museum is proud to partner with the University of Oregon Center for Asian and Pacific Studies (CAPS) and the Portland Japanese Garden to cosponsor a two-day professional development workshop for K-12 educators.

The workshop will feature: a gallery tour focused on Chinese Art, led by Maribeth Graybill, the Arlene and Harold Schnitzer Curator of Asian Art; a Japanese Art lecture by Akiko Walley, Professor of Japanese Art in the Department of the History of Art and Architecture at the University of Oregon; entry to the Portland Chinese Garden; and a half-day excursion at the Japanese Garden, during which Professor Walley will use attributes of the Garden to teach universal concepts in Japanese Art. The garden lecture will be followed by a hands-on workshop led by Japanese multidisciplinary artist Mami Takahashi, Exhibition Manager at the Japanese Garden. The workshop will culminate with a roundtable discussion, in which participants will discuss how to utilize the workshop experiences in a variety of disciplines and classroom settings. The roundtable will be co-led by our UO CAPS Teacher Consultants, Katie Gillard, Art Teacher in the Beaverton School District, and Carrie Erickson, Art teacher at Mountain View High School (Bend). The workshop will provide inspiring and educational resources for teachers that can be applied in the classroom in a variety of contexts.

Free admission to the Portland Art Museum, Portland Japanese Garden, and Portland Chinese Garden included. Free access to K-12 East Asian curriculum units developed at the Center for Asian and Pacific Studies. Professional Development Units. Lunch provided.

Note: Each participant is responsible for making their own lodging arrangements. We encourage you to do that ASAP if you need to stay overnight. Hotels in Portland get filled quickly and are more expensive during summer.

The deadline for priority registration is June 1, 2017. The number of available seats is limited and it will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Register online.
