As artists, many of us work alone; without meaningful relationships, our creative efforts can remain unseen, or worse, stifled. Small Talk Collective was formed with the assertion that support and connection is necessary to bolster creativity and productivity. We find we are truly stronger together. Small Talk consists of seven members meeting regularly to critique, discuss, and brainstorm personal work and collaborative projects. An all-female group, Small Talk fosters a non-competitive environment where personal growth and strategic collaboration can thrive. The panel discussion will involve a range of topics including: the collective’s origin story, the relationship between personal projects and group efforts, the role of self-portraiture in photography, and whether photographing is, at heart, a solitary activity.

About Small Talk Collective

Small Talk is a photography collective comprised of seven women. The collective formed at the initiative of Kristy Hruska in Portland, Oregon in 2015.

As a group, we are interested in exploring the nature of what it means to be a visual storyteller. In practical terms we pool resources, provide support and exchange ideas – we engage in the best kind of small talk, that which binds us together, fostering stronger work and facilitating collaboration. Looking forward, we will explore showing and publishing our work together while individually pursuing personal projects.
