Michael Cherney, Photographer

Photographer, calligrapher, and book artist Michael Cherney has in the past year been featured in exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, and a one-man show at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Intellectually engaging, meditative, and breathtakingly beautiful, Cherney’s work is executed with great sophistication, drawing on the subtleties of China’s most scholarly and esoteric traditions— calligraphy and ink painting. Born in New York, Michael Cherney is today based in Beijing and known to his admirers east and west by his Chinese name, Qiu Mai. He will show and speak about his latest work, in which he combines photography with the subject matter, materials, and formats of classical Chinese painting.

Sponsored by the Asian Art Council and the Photography Council.
