A True Sense of Things

Maude I. Kerns in Oregon

DEC 1, 2012 – MAR 10, 2013

One of the first to practice and promote modernism in the Northwest, Portland native Maude I. Kerns (1876–1965) also served as an inspiration to women artists in this region and beyond. Best known for her non-representational works, other areas of her artistic development have been largely overlooked. This exhibition reveals her contributions in three major genres—landscape, figural, and non-objective—and explores their relationships to one another, as well as their place in the evolution of her work.

Organized by the Portland Art Museum and curated by Jennifer J. Harper, Ph.D.
