The Northwest Film Center is a regional media arts resource and service organization founded to encourage the study, appreciation and utilization of the moving image arts, foster their artistic and professional excellence, and to help create a climate in which they may flourish. Founded in 1972, the Center joined the institution in 1979, and is now one of the country’s largest and most respected film arts organizations.

The Center conducts an active year-round exhibition program featuring foreign, classic, experimental, and independent works presented in thematic series, special retrospectives, and visiting artist programs that highlight major contributions to the art form. Highlights of the Center’s annual programming include the Portland International Film FestivalNorthwest Filmmakers’ Festival and Top Down Rooftop Cinema series.

Make & Learn

The Film Center’s Education Program includes the School of Film, which offers a diverse curriculum in film and video production, animation and screenwriting and the opportunity to develop personal vision in a hands-on context. The Global Classroom Program brings the best in new world cinema to high school students through free screenings and interactive artist visits during the Portland International Film Festival and throughout the school year.

In addition to exhibition, learning, and teaching opportunities, the Film Center’s Filmmaker Services offer circulating programs of work by regional filmmakers, fiscal sponsorship, low-cost equipment access and a variety of information and consulting resources for artists and organizations in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Alaska.

NW Film Center: Silver Screen Club

Support

The Silver Screen Club is the Film Center’s annual subscription service and is an opportunity to support the Film Center’s rich exhibition and educational offerings, including our Festivals and annual film series; year-round adult School of Film classes and workshops; Global Classroom high school film exhibition program and summer film camps for kids and teens. As a thank-you for their generosity, members receive enticing benefits including discounted and free admission to our year-round screenings and Festivals (including the Portland International Film Festival), as well as invitations to exclusive receptions, events, screenings and lectures.
