Wild Beauty: Photographs of the Columbia River Gorge, 1867-1957

Now in its second edition,Wild Beauty assembles the story of Oregon’s place in the development of photography as an art form and features images of the Columbia River Gorge made by world-renowned photographers. Gathered from private collections, archives, and artist estates, the 360 page large format book reproduces a comprehensive history of this living landmark and the medium of photography through works by Carlton E. Watkins, Edward Curtis, Benjamin Gifford, Alfred Monner, and others. Written by Portland Art Museum Curator of Photography Terry Toedtemeier and co-author John Laursen, this latest book in the Northwest Photography Series captures cultural memories of the Gorge before hydroelectric dams altered the landscape and shares the stories behind the more than 135 images taken from 1867 to 1957. Wild Beauty is co-published by the Northwest Photography Archive, Oregon State University Press, and the Portland Art Museum.
