Julia Calabrese is a multidisciplinary artist who uses video and performance to create her visual language. Calabrese combines elements of dance and theater, set and costume design, and community engagement to make site-specific artworks. She inhabits natural landscapes or constructs immersive environments to explore themes of human frailty and failure, joy, and the absurd. Her work focuses on the human body and imaginative possibilities held within unexpected settings and unfamiliar situations.

Calabrese grew up in Fairfax, Virginia, and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Alfred University in 2007. She lives and works in Portland, OR.

During her residency at PAM CUT, Calabrese will undertake an ambitious reinterpretation of a scene from the 1982 film Moonstruck, starring Cher and Nicolas Cage. In this project, she will embody all the characters, assemble the costumes, and build a set that pays homage to the original film.

The project will culminate in two distinct video formats: a single-channel video offering a faithful recreation of the scene, and a multichannel video installation. In the latter, Calabrese will perform live as Ronny Cammareri (originally portrayed by Nicolas Cage), interacting with the projected characters on monitors, creating a theatrical experience that blurs the lines between film and live performance.
