Write Around PAM: Malia Jensen

Installation view; Hand, with Plum, Nehalem Estuary, 2019

When was the last time you were able to sit still? The kind of still that allows you to unclench your jaw, let your mind wander, and really rest in the present moment? There is so much important work to do—in our lives, in our communities, and in our world. Alongside this work is the importance of rest, of letting go and resetting, to return again tomorrow. Malia Jensen’s Worth Your Salt invites us into this kind of stillness, immersing us in the wild places of Oregon with a unique, sculptural twist. Today, we invite you to spend some time just sitting with this piece, letting it wash into and around and through you. And at some point, while you are watching, we invite you to write, putting thoughts and ideas onto the page, so that your mind is free to let them go again. Before or after you write, we encourage you to learn more about Jensen’s work and life.

We have two prompts to help you get started. As always, you can choose one, both, or write whatever else comes. Set a timer for 15 mins and just keep your pen moving.

Through the trees… / In the quiet…

Writing in community is powerful. We are grateful to our longtime partner Write Around Portland for the writing prompts and inspiration. You can revisit past Sunday posts and look for continuing weekly posts through the fall. Please share your work with us! @writearoundpdx @portlandartmuseum #RespectWritingCommunity #WriteAroundPAM
