Get into the Halloween spirit by crafting a one-of-a-kind creature mask in our two-part immersive papier-mâché workshop. Join Portland-based visual strategist, illustrator, and teaching artist Fry for a workshop that celebrates storytelling, personal creativity, and artistic expression. This hands-on experience is designed to inspire and guide you in making a mask that’s uniquely yours, while fostering a collaborative community atmosphere.
Workshop Highlights:
- Session 1: Foundations and Construction
- Begin with a comprehensive introduction to the essentials of papier-mâché, including how to prepare different kinds of pastes and preparing and applying paper strips to achieve optimal adhesion and a smooth surface.
- Learn to build armatures using everyday materials like balloons, cardboard, and wire, creating the foundation for your mask.
- Explore techniques for sculpting distinct facial features using materials such as clay, cardboard, or rolled paper, and master the art of blending and smoothing layers for a seamless finish.
- Session 2: Painting and Finishing Touches
- Bring your mask to life as you apply base coats and layer color to create depth, shading, and highlights, adding realism and character through the use of acrylic paint and paint pens.
- Personalize your creation by incorporating finishing touches with materials like fabric, feathers, and beads, ensuring your mask is as unique as your creative vision.
Throughout the workshop, you’ll be encouraged to share ideas and inspiration with fellow participants, enhancing your project through constructive feedback in a supportive environment.
