Families will meet in the lobby of the new Rothko Pavilion. Additional information about the program will be emailed 1 week prior to the program.

In this hands-on family workshop, participants ages 7+ will create colorful lanterns inspired by conceptual artist Jeppe Hein and his artwork Please Participate, currently on view at the Portland Art Museum. Hein’s work uses playful action words and simple prompts to encourage participation, reflection, and communication, making it a perfect starting point for family creativity.

Together, families will take a close look at the artwork and brainstorm action words or short phrases that reflect how they like to spend time together or support intentions. Using photo frame mat boards, decorative tape, and vinyl decals, each family will design and build a lantern that brings those shared ideas to life. We’ll illuminate the finished lanterns with flameless tea lights and create a glowing reminder of our shared experience.

Why join? Spend quality time together, practice close looking, and collaborate on a creative project that celebrates connection and shared intentions.

Each family group must include at least one adult and one child, add additional adults for $10, additional children for $5 each.
