Inspired by W.E.B. Du Bois’s legacy, this exhibition gathers Black contemporary artists who use printmaking, sculpture, and multimedia to examine race, technology, and identity in a data-driven world.
Data Consciousness: Reframing Blackness in Contemporary Print is a landmark exhibition that brings together leading Black contemporary artists who use printmaking, sculpture, installation, textile, and video to interrogate the intersections of race, technology, and representation in a data-driven society. The exhibition features work by Tahir Hemphill, Julia Mallory, Silas Munro, Kameelah Janan Rasheed, and William Villalongo and Shraddha Ramani. Curated by Tiffany E. Barber, the exhibition draws inspiration from W.E.B. Du Bois’s concept of double consciousness and his pioneering data visualizations, which mapped Black life after Reconstruction and remain foundational to American design history and data science.
Data Consciousness: Reframing Blackness in Contemporary Print is organized by Print Center New York and curated by Tiffany Barber, Assistant Professor of African American Art at the University of California, Los Angeles. Support for this exhibition tour is provided by Art Bridges.
The Portland Art Museum’s presentation of Data Consciousness is also supported by the Black Art and Experiences Initiative. Funding for the Black Art and Experiences Initiative comes from a generous grant from the 1803 Fund. Additional support provided by Meyer Memorial Trust and the Endowment for Black Art and Experiences.
