Join teaching artist and pattern-maker Julz Clementine for a creative, hands-on family workshop inspired by David Hockney and his vibrant digital flower drawings.

We’ll begin in the exhibition David Hockney: Works from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation, where families will explore Hockney’s creative process through playful looking games and guided prompts. Participants will discover how he used digital tools to experiment with color, shape, and composition. Inspired by his daily practice of sending flower drawings to friends, families will work together to imagine and design a shared digital bouquet that brings everyone’s ideas into one collaborative artwork.

Next, families will move from iPad to hands-on making, transforming their designs into bold cut-paper postcards ready to share with loved ones near and far. Along the way, there will be time to reflect, share, and celebrate each other’s creations.

To wrap up, each family will write a thoughtful, self-addressed note filled with something kind, encouraging, or lighthearted. Your message will be mailed back to you later as a special surprise.

This engaging experience brings together digital creativity, hands-on artmaking, and meaningful connection, with a touch of snail mail magic!

Why join? Create something meaningful together, practice close looking at art, and transform a single family artwork into shareable postcards and a heartfelt keepsake, inspired by David Hockney’s joyful practice of connecting with others through art. It’s an opportunity to blend digital creativity, hands-on making, and real-world connection into one memorable experience.

Each family group must include at least one adult and one child, add additional adults for $10, additional children for $5 each. Families will meet in the lobby of the new Rothko Pavilion. Additional information about the program will be emailed 1 week prior to the program.
