Opening Lecture with Curator Jeannie Kenmotsu, Ph.D., The Arlene and Harold Schnitzer Curator of Asian Art

In the early postwar years, artist Yoshida Chizuko (née Inoue, 1924–2017) made remarkable inroads in the male-dominated, often conservative, art establishment of midcentury Japan. Gifted with a brilliant sense of color and pattern, she was committed to forging her own style of radical modernism. From the bold explorations of her youth to lyrical and evocative compositions of her later years, her work engaged with abstraction for over sixty years. However, today Chizuko is best known as a member of the Yoshida family of artists into which she married. This lecture presents a new understanding of Chizuko’s six-decade artistic career. Focusing on her formative early period as an oil painter and the distinctive materials and techniques she employed as a printmaker, it reveals new insights that redefine the story of this fascinating artist.

Lecture ticket includes admission to the Museum for September 28.
