Gaines’ large-scale paintings capture the history and celebrate the women featured on the iconic covers of JET magazine throughout the 1950s and 60s.

Four of Gaines’ paintings from his exhibition at Russo Lee Gallery will be on view for one week in the Marion L. Miller Gallery at the Portland Art Museum’s Mark Building.
About the artist
Originally from Chicago, Gaines now lives and works in Portland, Oregon. He received his BFA in Drawing and Painting from Northern Michigan University in 2015. In December of 2020, his artwork was featured on the cover of New York Magazine. Additionally, Gaines has received editorials from The New York Times. His work has been exhibited nationally in both solo and group exhibitions, and is in notable private, public, and corporate collections including Nike, Beaverton, OR; SoHo House, and Portland Art Museum, Portland, OR.
