David Hockney: Two Works, Two Ways
Join Lloyd DeWitt, Richard and Janet Geary Curator of European & American Art Pre-1930, as well as April Zimel and Anne Marple from Portland Dachshund Rescue, for informal gallery conversations centered on David Hockney’s work. These sessions pair two voices—focusing on different disciplines—to explore two artworks through distinct lenses, encouraging close looking, dialogue, and new ways of understanding Hockney’s practice.
Hockney lost several friends to the AIDS epidemic and cancer in the 1980s and 1990s. To fill these emotional voids, he took comfort in the company of two loyal dachshunds named Stanley and Boodgie, who became his frequent portrait subjects. Stanley was named after Stan Laurel, one half of the slapstick comedy duo from earlier black-and-white film days, Laurel and Hardy, an act much beloved by his late father. Interestingly, two other artistic giants whom Hockney himself admired, Picasso and Andy Warhol, were also proud dog dads and likewise shared a love of mini dachshunds.

About Portland Dachshund Rescue
Portland Dachshund Rescue Inc is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, no-kill organization passionately committed to the care and rehoming of dachshunds and other breeds in need throughout Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. They choose to rescue this breed not because they are cute and desirable, but because they often have medical and behavioral issues which makes them a higher risk of needing to be rehomed.
Their rescue was founded in 2020 with compassion, care, and commitment in a foster-based setting. In their combined 15+ years in animal rescue, they continually saw the elderly, sick, and disabled dogs being passed over due to a lack of funding or care. They envision a world where their rescue is not only saving dogs that have been left behind but also educating the community about the unique challenges dachshunds and other breeds face, transforming each new volunteer and adoptive family into ambassadors for the rescue.
